Starbucks or Dunkin’ Donuts. Keurig or French Press. Black or full of cream. Coffee is more than just your morning savior; did you know it’s also a home maintenance hero? Here are a few ways you can use coffee to help with your household tasks.

1) Prevent Pests: Roaches love coffee, too. These pests will sneak into your kitchen for two things: food and water. The wetter the surface, the more roaches will be drawn to it, especially if there’s a delicious smell. To trap roaches, grab a mason jar and fill it half full with water and plenty of coffee grounds as bait. Place the jar along the wall so the cockroaches can scurry down into the jar. Once they’re in, they’ll be trapped! Put a lid on it and dispose of the contents. We consider it a great sacrifice of grounds.

 2) Clean Windows: Cleaning windows is nobody’s favorite chore, but with the right tools it can be less of a drag. Use coffee filters to clean windows for a streak-free and lint-free shine. This inexpensive option won’t leave residue on your hands like another alternative window wipe (cough… newspaper… cough) and leaves a serious shine.

3) Remove Odors: Coffee grounds can be used for more than getting rid of roaches. To remove refrigerator odors, dump one to two cups of coffee grounds on a plate, and put the plate on the center shelf. Leave overnight. Because coffee grounds are roasted, they turn into a form of activated carbon. We’ll skip the hardcore science, but basically the carbon has an expanded surface area, allowing molecules to cling to it (like odors). Your refrigerator will smell fresh the next day. Note: We recommend you toss the used grounds unless Bad Odor Blend is your favorite roast.

Coffee does you a lot of good. It wakes you up in the morning, warms you up on cold days, and gives you that extra pep at 3 PM. With these tips, it will do your house a lot of good, too. Your morning coffee routine just got a little more interesting.
