Here’s the dilemma. Fire extinguishers exist to protect your home and family from fire. Each year more than 2,500 people die and 12,600 are injured in home fires in the United States. Fire extinguishers play an important role in mitigating damage and injury, but they are often hidden away in the back of cabinets or closets because the red canister doesn’t fit the decor. If it’s out of sight, will you remember where it is when you need it? Will other members in the house know where to look in case of emergency?

A French company called Fire Design is attempting to address this problem by creating designer fire extinguishers. You can buy a polka dot, pink, and even “I heart NY” extinguisher if you’re willing to spend about 90 euros a pop (roughly $118). Note: traditional fire extinguishers start at about $15.

The hip designs and modern patterns might motivate you to place the fire extinguisher in a more prominent spot in your home. But, the non-traditional look could present another challenge. The red canister was designed to be easy to recognize and spot – so, is changing the look the best thing for your safety? Tell us what you think! This is a great example of the age-old battle between fashion and function.

Safety tip: fire experts recommend you keep at least one fire extinguisher in your kitchen and one in your garage (if you have one). Ideally, you should keep a fire extinguisher on every level of your home.
